“Freedom” – Richie Havens at Woodstock, August 15th, 1969
“Woodstock is known as one of the greatest happenings of all time and –perhaps- the most pivotal moment in music history.”
The setting for todays song is 43 years ago today, August 15th – 18th, 1969: Woodstock. This “Aquarian Exposition of Music and Art,” occurred at a moment in time that was unique for social discourse, events and music. Over half a million people gathered at Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, NY to experience music at its best. Hailed as one of the most peaceful gatherings of so many people, it became an icon of the 60’s generation.
Two children were born, two people died, and most people had an experience they will remember and cherish forever.
Richie Havens opened Woodstock at 5 pm, August 15th, and played for over 2 hours. He closed his set with today’s song, “Freedom,” which he improvised at Woodstock! He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1941, and is known as folk-singer, guitarist and excellent performer. Woodstock helped launch his career from folk circles to international fame. He has recorded more than 20 albums, and announced this year that he will stop touring (after 45 years).
