“Slow Burn” – Doomtree
It’s Monday again, folks. However, today’s not just any old Monday, but Labor Day Monday. Our day off to celebrate all the grueling work we’ve been putting in for the last year. Hopefully you already know this and have plans laid for a truly fun and relaxing day, but first let’s take a moment and listen to a righteous jam from Midwest hip-hop collective, Doomtree.
Doomtree is a group of seven rappers/producers out of Minneapolis, Minnesota including Mike Mictlan and Sims, the two whose song we’re listening to today. Other members are Dessa, Cecil Otter, P.O.S, Paper Tiger, and Lazerbeak, with two past members MK Larada and Turbo Nemesis. The origins of the group date back to 2001 when Sims was fresh out of high school, writing rhymes and buying beats from P.O.S for 30 bucks a pop. At this point, P.O.S was living with Mike Mictlan, Cecil Otter and MK Larada in the house that would later be known as the Doomtree House. The group of friends started recording music and releasing it under the name Doomtree.
“Slow Burn” is off of Doomtree’s 2007 release False Hopes, and was produced by former member MK Larada. The beat smolders to start off the track before building to a rhythmic inferno that Sims and Mike Mictlan deftly spit on top of. Bump this a few times and then go take advantage of a gloriously work free Monday.
