“Passin Me By” – The Pharcyde
A rap song about not getting the girl? This I have to hear.
Tha Pharcyde is a hip-hop band from a bygone era, when the beats were simple and the lyrics were innocent. Based, in South Central Los Angeles, the original four members of the group are Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson) and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart). The band has released 4 albums between 1992 and 2004, with the first of these (Bizarre Ride II Tha Pharcyde) being the only one to be labeled Gold by the RIAA. “Passing Me By” was the bands most successful single, reaching #1 on US Hip-Hop charts. However, the most heralded album the band appeared on was actually Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. This album, produced in association with The Red Hot Organization, was meant to raise awareness for the AIDS epidemic with relation to African-Americans and was named as the “Album of the Year” by Time magazine in 1994.
“Passin Me By” is a great song with a great beat, about the frustration of being unable to get the attention of a beautiful woman. Each band member tells a different story of a girl that he either couldn’t be with or was afraid to talk to. This is an emotion that I think every man has experienced, the perfection of a beautiful woman from afar. In fact, there is a great ad campaign being run by axe right now. Be it Shelly, Sarah Glenn, or the woman in the red dress (5 points to the first person to tell us where that reference is from…), every man has wondered what if…
