“End of the World Party” – Medeski, Martin and Wood
And a very happy Apocalypse Day to you, dear reader! In case the volcanos and fault lines haven’t started opening up, or if you’re still waiting for the meteor shower or solar flare to wipe us all out, I have something for you to pass the time.
Say hello to Medeski, Martin and Wood. The American jazz trio formed in 1991, consisting of John Medeski on keyboards and piano, Billy Martin on drums and percussion, and Chris Wood on double bass and bass guitar. The band draws on influences from a number of musical traditions, from funk to hip hop, and is known for an unconventional style sometimes described as “avant-groove”. MMW has found moderate mainstream success, often working with noted guitarist John Scofield and touring on the jam band circuit.
Deep tape strings, affected (somewhat erie) vocals, riffing funk drums, a driving bluesy bass, and (oh man) that Fender Rhodes sound! This tune is swankier than ever, and somehow sounds like an undead cocktail party banger. It’s been featured on Grey’s Anatomy too, so you know it’s good!
But seriously, these guys knew what was up years ago. The album End of the World Party (Just in Case) came out in 2004. Please read more about it here.
Whatever type of party you have tonight, be thankful for what life has given you already and now go live it up like there ain’t no tomorrow!
