“People Kill People” – Planet VI (formerly Rock City)
Planet VI is a US Virgin Islands-born American R&B duo, composed of brothers Timothy (b. 1984) and Theron Thomas (b. 1982), who go by the stage names of A.I (formerly Don’t Talk) and Uptown A.P (formerly Da Spokesman). The Thomas brother grew up in St. Thomas, USVI where their rap/R&B/Reggae fusion style developed and blossomed. Upon graduating from Charlotte Amalie High School in St. Thomas, the brother moved to the mainland and began performing in talent shows. However, their first major coup was writing “The Rain” by Akon, which was released on the double platinum album Konvicted. Ever since the young duo has been writing for some of the biggest names in R&B and rap, including Drake, Justin Beiber, Usher, T.I. and more.
“People Kill People” is a song about the scourge of gun violence that we have seen in recent years in the Virgin Islands, but I thought that sadly it was fitting for the current political environment in the US as well. Some people feel that there needs to be more gun control, and some believe that the problem lies with how we raise our children and our social situation. Regardless of which side of the line you fall on, we can all agree the we are clearly doing doing something wrong. Enjoy this gem from a genuine Virgin Islands success story, and pray for those affected by gun violence in these troubled days.
