“Für Hildegard von Bingen” – Devendra Banhart
Devendra Obi Banhart was born to a Venezuealan mother and an American father in Houston, TX in1981 where he lived until his parents separated two years later. His mother and him then moved to Caracas, Venezuela where he lived until he was 14 when his stepfather moved the family back to the US. Banhart briefly attended the San Francisco Art Institute as a teenager, but soon ended up skipping classes to busk on the streets of the Castro neighborhood in San Fran. His first name is taken from the king of the Hindu gods and his middle name is straight out of Star Wars, which explains why the musical force is so strong with this one.
Hildegard of Bingen, or Saint Hildegard, was a German nun, writer, composer, philosopher, and general Jill of all trades who was alive from roughly 1098 to 1179. She was honored as a Doctor of the Church in 2012 by our previous quitter of a pope, Benedict XVI. She managed to fit quite a bit of pious living into here eighty odd years, I’ve included a link below to her fascinating bio.
Hope you enjoy Banhart’s tribute to Saint Hildegard aka Sibyl of the Rhine.
